The 2007 Gunpowder Plot £2 coin was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, the infamous attempt by Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
Designed by Peter Forster, the reverse features a striking representation of a traditional 17th-century lantern, a symbol closely associated with Guy Fawkes and the events of that night. The edge inscription reads:
“REMEMBER REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER”, the famous rhyme linked to the plot’s legacy.
This coin has become a staple for collectors of British history, particularly those interested in political events and historic anniversaries.
Interestingly, some early coins in this release had a notable error, with “FIFTH” appearing to be misread as “FIFTH” due to the serif styling — making those variants highly collectable.
With a circulated mintage of 5,140,500, this coin remains widely available but highly respected for its historical theme.
