The 2008 Olympic Handover £2 coin was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the official handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing 2008 to London 2012.
Designed by Thomas T. Docherty, the coin features the London 2012 Olympic logo alongside a stylised representation of a pass of the Olympic flag, symbolising the transition from one host city to the next. It’s the first UK coin ever issued in connection with the London 2012 Olympic Games, making it a key starting point for Olympic-themed collections.
With a circulated mintage of 918,000, it remains one of the lower-mintage commemorative £2 coins, making it a desirable piece for both general UK coin collectors and Olympic memorabilia enthusiasts.
